《神曲》是但丁1307年至1321在放逐期間寫的一部長詩。全詩分為三部《地獄篇》（已經收錄并出版在“最經典英語文庫”第一輯里）、《煉獄篇》（本輯已收錄）和《天堂篇》。每部33首，最前面增加一首序詩，共100首，描繪了詩人但丁在維吉爾和貝阿特麗采的指引下，幻游地獄、煉獄、天堂三界的故事。寫出《神曲·地獄篇》的但丁是個戰士。說但丁是“戰士”，是由于他早年積極參加反封建貴族的政治斗爭，并為此被判處終身流放，拒絕屈服，直至客死他鄉。說《神曲》是“夢幻現實巨著”，是因為它不僅借助了夢幻中神游三界的文學形式，而且極其廣泛地包含了當時意大利的社會政治和文化方面的情況，描寫了詩人幻游中遇到的上百個各種類型的人物，對政治黨爭、教會罪惡、哲學、神學、科學、藝術等諸多方面都做了藝術性的闡述和總結，堪稱歐洲中世紀的百科全書。此次，“最經典英語文庫”出版的是第二部分《煉獄篇》，也是《地獄篇》改惡從善歷程的繼續。美國19世紀著名詩人朗費羅，通過精確的理解，將《神曲》翻譯成英語，現在這個英譯本已成為英語世界里的精品。法國19世紀著名版畫家、雕刻家和插圖作家古斯塔夫·多雷，通過精確的理解，為其作了充實飽滿、質感強烈、精美異常的插圖。通過閱讀這部《神曲》，我們可以了解但丁，了解“地獄”，了解“煉獄”，也可以了解“天堂”（將出版）。
