TheBlackCatisashortstorybyEdgarAllanPoe.ItwasfirstpublishedintheAugust19,1843,editionofTheSaturdayEveningPost.Itisastudyofthepsychologyofguilt,oftenpairedinanalysiswithPoe's"TheTell-TaleHeart".Inboth,amurderercarefullyconcealshiscrimeandbelieveshimselfunassailable,buteventuallybreaksdownandrevealshimself,impelledbyanaggingreminderofhisguilt.Thestoryispresentedasafirst-personnarrativeusinganunreliablenarrator.Heisacondemnedmanattheoutsetofthestory.Thenarratortellsusthatfromanearlyagehehaslovedanimals.Heandhiswifehavemanypets,includingalarge,beautifulblackcat(asdescribedbythenarrator)namedPluto.Thiscatisespeciallyfondofthenarratorandviceversa.Theirmutualfriendshiplastsforseveralyears,untilthenarratorbecomesanalcoholic.Onenight,aftercominghomecompletelyintoxicated,hebelievesthecattobeavoidinghim.Whenhetriestoseizeit,thepanickedcatbitesthenarrator,andinafitofrage,heseizestheanimal,pullsapen-knifefromhispocket,anddeliberatelygougesoutthecat'seye.
