目前對沖突適應效應的解釋主要有四種理論：沖突監測理論（conflict monitoring theory）（Botvinick，Nystrom，Fissell，Carter，& Cohen，1999；Botvinick，Cohen，& Carter，2004）、特征整合理論（feature integration account）（Hommel，Proctor，& Vu，2004）、學習理論（learning account）（Verguts& Notebaert，2009）和厭惡情緒理論（disgust emotion theory）。
