Time for action - animating the hands

Let's start with the hands. As mentioned earlier it's an often overlooked feature of iClone. Many a character has been animated only to have its lustre tarnished by stiff hands.

  1. Select the male character.
  2. Right-click on the male character to invoke the right click menu.
  3. Choose Motion Editor | Hands to invoke the Hands menus.
  4. On the right side menu, click on Left under Apply Gesture to apply to the left hand.
  5. On the left menu, choose Hold Stick from the Content Manager.
  6. Depress the Loop/Speed button on the top of the Timeline.
  7. Hover your cursor over the end of the motion clip until the cursor changes to a double arrow then move the clip towards the end of the Timeline. In this case all the way to the end.
  8. Check to make sure the male character is still selected.
  9. Right-click to invoke the menu.
  10. Choose Motion Menu | Edit Motion
  11. Select the fingers of the left hand and close them down onto the fork handle with the Rotate and Move keys from the top menu bar.

What just happened?

We closed the left hand with a Hold Stick motion, but we needed to let iClone know to hold that hand motion for the duration of the clip. To accomplish this task we depressed the Loop button in the Timeline and expanded the end of the Hold Stick clip to the end of the timeline.

We then went into the Motion Editor for the Hands and manipulated the fingers until they fit the current prop.

Note

When we initially load a Hand motion there will be no looping so the motion is lost very quickly. To make sure that the motion plays long enough we add the looping by depressing the Loop button on the timeline and dragging out the end of the clip to whatever length we need before we change the hand pose again. In this case we need to extend it to the end of the clip. For animated gestures you may want to stretch the motion out to slow it down to a more realistic speed.

The following image shows the before and after results of adding the Hold Stick motion and adjusting the hand and fork position:
