Time for action - the timeline concept … A mini-tutorial
The best way to grasp the timeline is to work with it, so we won't be distracted by all of the props, trees, and terrain. We will work on a new blank project with a simple prop to demonstrate exactly what features of that prop are controlled by the timeline, then we will close that project and use what we've learned in the main project.

- Save your project if you haven't already and open a new blank project.
- Click on the Set tab then click on the Props button.
- Double-click on the Box_001 Building Block under 3D Props in the Content Manager.
- Click the Home key in the top toolbar.
- Zoom out a comfortable distance.
- The following image shows the Box_001 in the 3D workspace after zooming out:
- If the Timeline isn't visible then right-click on the Box_001 prop and select Timeline.
- Select the Box_001 prop and click on the Move button. If the Translation Gizmos are not visible then press Ctrl + Q to toggle them on or turn them on in Preferences.
- In the Timeline's Current Frame box, type in 1000 to go to frame 1000:
- Move the box to the left side of the workspace with the red axis gizmo. This will create a key frame at frame 1000.
- Move the time scrubber to frame 2000 or type 2000 into the Current Frame box.
- Use the Gizmo to move the box up towards the top of the workspace.
- Timeline controlled movement is shown in the following image:
- Return the time scrubber to frame one and press the play button to review our work so far.
- Select Box_001 from the Content Manager or click on it with the time scrubber at frame one.
- Go to the Color Selection boxes on the right menu under the Material & Texture Settings. Making sure you are on frame 1, select blue color from the Color dialog and click on OK.
- Set the color to the same blue used in the previous step for the Ambient Color selector. Leave the Specular Color set to white.
- You should now have a blue box in the center of the screen.
- Move to frame 1000 either by typing it in or double-clicking the key frame at 1000.
- The following image shows a key frame created at frame 1000:
- On frame 1000, with the key frame highlighted, click on the Diffuse Color under the Material & Texture Settings section of the right menu.
- Set the color to yellow.
- Now move to frame 2000 either by typing it in or clicking on the key frame at 2000.
- Set the color to red.
What just happened?
We have animated movement and color change. Save your project and press the play button to see the results. The box should move across the screen and up.
