Time for action - working with shadows
In order to keep things simple, we are only going to work with shadows on light number 1. Trying to keep up with the direction of multiple light source shadows can be a chore when we begin to learn lighting. Hence, all subsequent lights will have the shadow box unchecked.
- Click on the Shadow input box for Directional/Spotlight 1 to turn it on if it's not already.
- Set the shadow to Self-Casting in the Shadow Settings section of the right menu.
Note
If the Self-Casting shadow option is not available due your hardware configuration, then select Drop Shadow or whatever shadow available setting you may have. If you can't see a shadow at all, no matter what options you try then skip this section. Shadows are hardware dependent. Your video card is an important part of this dependency.
- Set the Opacity to 80%.
- Set the Blur level to 3.
Now we have a shadow casting light that will cast a dark, blurred shadow for scene objects.
- Click the checkbox of Light 2 in the Scene Manager to turn it on.
- Click on the color square for Light 2 in the Scene Manager or click on the arrow next to the colored square in the Light Setting section of the right menu. Either of these will pop up a color window.
- Choose one of the orange colors in the Basic section of the color popup and notice the difference this has made in the scene.
- This could be too much orange so let's click on the color square in the Scene Manager again and move the right-side slider up about 1/4 of the distance towards the top of the color window. This will decrease the amount of orange that the light casts.
What just happened?
White light can be rather flat when it interacts with props and other scene objects, even for a daytime outdoor scene. We wanted to add a touch of warmth to the scene and that can be done by adding a warm color to a light. You'll notice that we didn't change the white color of Light 1 because that will cast a heavy shade of the selected color over everything in the scene. We just want highlights of a warm color. For this we will use Directional/Spotlight 2.
If you don't think this light is affecting the scene then turn it off to notice the difference. Experiment with the orange color to achieve the lighting you desire. Watch out how the orange lighting interacts with the leaves on the tree and also with the other objects. As you adjust the intensity of the orange color, you will notice that moving the slider to a darker color of orange adds more color and less light to the scene.
We will not be changing the direction of the lighting, which is done by selecting the light and using the Rotate tool. Check the light's Show checkbox in the Scene Manager and you will see a colored line on the screen that displays the direction of the light to help in adjusting the light's affect.
