Time for action—creating a beat pattern
Let's make a beat, using the steps of the Beats+Bassline Editor:
- When a sample is loaded into the Beats+Bassline Editor, an instrument is created to play the sample and next to that instrument we have a Volume knob, a Pan knob, and 16 little segments. Let's click on the first segment and then every fourth segment following:
- This is going to give us the standard, no-frills, dance kick drum. In the dance community, this is usually called four on the floor. Hit your Space bar, or click on the Play Icon to have a listen.
- Let's get another element in there. A clap would be a good bet for our next instrument. Let's go back to the Side Bar and grab ourselves a clap from the same menu we ordered the bass drum from. Just drag-and-drop like before. Have you noticed that clicking on the sample in the Side Bar lets you know what it's going to sound like? Handy, huh?
- When the clap is imported into the editor, we'll get another 16-step sequencer to work with. Click on the fifth and thirteenth segment. Now we have something that looks similar to the following screenshot:
- To audition our little rhythm, hit the Space bar while the editor is selected. We will hear a bass drum and clap playing that sounds very much like the foundation of a dance project.
What just happened?
Congratulations! You've just created your first basic beat! We created a four on the floor kick pattern to set up our dance beat. When we added the clap, it created emphasis in the rhythm on step 5 and 13 of our 16 step sequencer. Now that we have our meat and potatoes beat together, let's start adding the spices.
Our first tweaking of samples
One issue we might hear is that our bass drum is doing some weird pitch stuff. Bassdrum02
from our sample library has a little strangeness happening to its pitch. It sounds like the sound gets higher as it plays. Let's open the Audiofile Processor and see if maybe we can tweak it slightly to get the sample to not sweep up in pitch so much.
