五月花號公約

1620年11月11日，在經過66天的海上漂泊之后，“五月花號”帆船向北美大陸靠近。他們的目的地本來是哈德遜河口地區，但由于海上風浪險惡，他們錯過了目標，于是就在現在的科德角外的普利茅斯港拋錨。由于那時已是深秋，他們就決定在那里登陸。

在上岸之前，41名男乘客簽訂了一份公約，目的是為了建立一個大家都能受到約束的自治基礎。在這份后來被稱為《“五月花號”公約》的文件里，簽署人立誓創立一個自治團體 ，這個團體是基于被管理者的同意而成立的，并且將依法治理這塊土地上的一切事務。這份公約是由“五月花號”船上的每一個家長，每一個成年單身男子和大多數受雇傭的男仆所簽署的，由于婦女那時沒有政治權利，所以沒有請她們簽署。

1991年的《世界年鑒》評價該公約是“自動同意管理自己的一個協議，是美國的第一套成文法”，它預兆了民主政治的許多理念。這份著名的文件也被人們稱為“美國的出生證明 ”。

我等簽約人是蒙上帝保佑的大不列顛、法蘭西和愛爾蘭的國王，信仰和教會的捍衛者詹姆斯國王陛下的忠順臣民。

為了上帝的榮耀，為了增進基督教信仰，為了我們國王和國家的榮譽，我們遠涉重洋， 在弗吉尼亞北部開發第一塊殖民地。我們在上帝面前一起莊嚴盟誓簽約，自愿結成民眾自治團體。為使上述目的得以順利實施、維護和發展，也為了將來能隨時依此而制定和頒布有益于殖民地全體民眾利益的公正法律、法規、條令、憲章和公職，我們全體都保證遵守和服從 。

據此于公元1620年11月11日，于英格蘭、法蘭西、愛爾蘭第十八世國王暨蘇格蘭第五十四世國王詹姆斯陛下在位之年，我等在科德角簽署姓名如下……

The Mayflower Compact

In the name of God, Amen.

We whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign Lord, King James, by the grace of God, of Great Britain,France and Ireland king, defender of the faith, etc., having undertaken.

For the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith, and honor of o ur king and country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts o f Virginia, do by these presents solemnly and mutually in the presence of God, a nd one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body pol itic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends afore said and by virtue hereof to enact constitute, and frame such just and equal law s,ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be t hought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony, unto which w e promise all due submission and obedience.

In witness whereof we have here under subscribed our names at Cape Cod the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our sovereign lord, King James, of England, France, and Ireland the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty fourth. Anno Domini 1620.
