Time for action - customizing the eyes and mouth

These features are easy to use and customize. You can have cat's eyes and fangs for teeth along with several more typical eye and mouth options:

  1. With the character selected click on the Head tab.
  2. Click on the Eyes button.
  3. In the left menu of the Content Manager select 09_Brown_A, or whichever eyes you want to use.
  4. Under Adjust Size in the right panel change the Narrow/Wide to -21.
  5. The mouth covers the teeth, tongue, and the inside color of the mouth. For Oral (Teeth) select Normal B in the Content Manager left panel or whichever teeth suit your purpose.

Note

Clicking on the Mouth tab will force open the mouth for a better view. The mouth will remain open until you select the eyes or face tab to exit the mouth mode.

This is another great area to explore and discover what options are available before moving on.

What just happened?

There are numerous modifications available for each eye too. Each eye has its own set of channel maps along with many other sliders that control brightness to glossiness. You can scale the eyes or move them.

Skin

The skin color of a character will change to match the face color of any imported face or it can be changed with its own set of sliders and controls. You can also export and digitally paint directly on the skin maps. For example, you could paint a T-shirt on the skin of an upper.

Note

The top-left 10X10 pixels of the face texture are used by the iClone engine to determine the skin color of the character.

iClone provides a set of skin tones in the Content Manager and all of these skins can be modified. They are good starting points. This is yet another example of the control Reallusion provides us over the character.

For this project, we will not be altering the skin.

Have a go hero - loading and customizing a female character

Loading characters is no more difficult than loading props and other objects. In this section, we'll load another character and then turn you loose to customise the character. It doesn't matter how your character looks to continue with this project but polishing those new found skills will help you remember them for future use.

Select the Jana character to load and place it near the original character. Customize the character using the features we've just covered to customize the second character to your liking.

Specifically, you can experiment with any or all of the features in the following list:

  • Facial features
  • Body proportion
  • New face
  • Eyes, mouth, and hair

Positioning the characters

The positioning of characters works in the same manner as positioning props and other objects in the 3D workspace. The same methods are available to place and fine tune your character's position. Use a combination of:

  • Direct movement using the mouse
  • Ctrl + Q to invoke the Gizmos for more precise placement
  • Direct input in the value input boxes of the character for fine tuning

Place the characters close to the grill as demonstrated in the following image:

Positioning the characters

Using character accessories and attaching props

Using accessories and props as accessories is a simple process in iClone. Accessories attach to certain areas of a character and props can be attached to characters too.

Props and accessories differ. Props are independent objects whereas accessories are dependent on the character they are attached to. A hat as an accessory will fit on the head of the character it's attached to and move with that character. The same hat as a prop (detached from a character) can sit on the floor, a hat rack, or on a table.

Any prop can be attached to a character. After attachment, the prop then becomes an accessory. Its corresponding pivot points and 3D placement will change to that of an attachment and the prop will function as an attachment until detached from the character. After detachment, the prop will function as a prop again. You will notice that the units in the input boxes for the prop will change when the prop is attached as an accessory.

Note

Any prop attached to a character will function and can be saved as an accessory. Items that are attached as accessories are saved with the character. Items linked as props are not saved with the character.
