Arranging layers
At first glance, it may appear that you only have one map layer displayed in the map view. This is because both the Counties and State Outline layers contain polygon features, and both files are currently using solid shading. When this happens, the polygons on top will obscure features underneath:
- Deselect the checkbox next to Counties to turn off the layer. When you turn off the layer, you should see the Illinois outline layer. Turn the Counties layer back on.
Note that beyond the layers in the Contents pane, it says Drawing Order. ArcGIS Pro renders your data from bottom to top, as if it were a stack of maps. The order in which the items appear in the Contents pane determines the order in which the layers are drawn. Some layers may be hidden beneath other layers. To change the order, click the layer name and drag the layer(s) up or down in the Contents pane. If you find you are unable to move your layers, make sure the first icon in the Contents pane is selected and that it says Drawing Order.
- Click once on the USstates layer so that the layer name is highlighted. Now, drag the name so that it appears preceding the UScounties layer in the Contents pane. You will now see the outline with the counties being obscured:
Remember, if you have a lot of layers, you can collapse the legends so that you can see more layers on the screen.
