42 without good cause, remove cores
趙Sir:Cause和cores這兩字較易明,一個是“原因”,一個是“核心”,你常用哪個?
Henry:我常用cause,cores則較少用。
趙Sir:那麼便先談常用的cause吧。Cause可用作名詞(noun)和動詞(verb),名詞cause有三個意思:
一、“原因、起因”,例如:
The major cause of these accidents is drivers going too fast.
(這些事故的主因是司機開得太快了。)
I have written an essay on the major cause of the First World War.
(我寫了一篇講述第一次世界大戰主要起因的文章。)
二、“理由、緣故”,例如:
His departure was cause for the celebration in the village.
(村裏的慶祝會是為歡送他而舉行的。)
He wouldn't have done it without good cause.
(他不可能無緣無故就這樣做的。)
Peter's father had good cause to be proud of him.
(彼得的父親有理由為他感到自豪。)
三、“理想”,例如:
Campaigners hope that people will be sympathetic to their cause.
(運動發起人希望大家支持他們的理想。)
It may be hard work but it's all in a good cause.
(工作可能很辛苦,但這一切都是為了崇高目標。)
動詞cause則指“引起”,例如:
The drug has been found to cause epileptic fits in laboratory mice.
(實驗發現這種藥會引起老鼠癲癇發作。)
Henry:Cores又如何?
趙Sir:Cores是core的複數,意思是“核”,例如:
Prepare fruits by removing any tough stems or cores.
(先把水果的梗和核除去。)
Henry:剩下來的肉應該很好吃!
