26　born and bred, couldn't have borne to be alone

趙Sir：Born和borne的讀音一樣，意思又是否相同？

Henry：這兩個字的意思似乎完全不同。

趙Sir：考考你：bear的過去式（past tense）是bore，過去分詞（past participle）是born還是borne？

Henry：是borne，對嗎？

趙Sir：只答對一半！因borne和born皆可！先談born，它是形容詞（adjective），也是動詞（verb）。動詞born的意思是“出生、誕生”，例如：

I was born in Hong Kong.

（我在香港出世。）

Meg was born into a large family.

（梅格生於一個大家庭。）

至於形容詞born，意思是“天生的”，例如：

Mary was a born dancer.

（瑪莉是一個天生舞蹈家。）

Henry：Born有很多個片語（phrase），可否介紹幾個？

趙Sir：可以。第一個是be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth，意思是“銜著銀湯匙出世”，亦即“生於富貴人家”，例如：

He doesn't have to work; he is born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

（他生於富貴人家，不用工作。）

第二個是born and bred，意思是“土生土長”，例如：

He is a Londoner, born and bred.

（他是一個土生土長的倫敦人。）

第三個是I wasn't born yesterday，意思是“別以為我這樣好騙”，例如：

Don't fool me. I wasn't born yesterday.

（不要騙我。別以為我這樣好騙。）

Henry：Borne又如何？

趙Sir：Borne是“承受”，例如：

I just couldn't have borne to be alone tonight.

（我就是忍受不了今晚的孤單。）

Henry：確實是寂寞難耐！
