13　bail the project out , bale hay

Henry：今天我們談甚麼？

趙Sir：你知道bail和bale這對同音異義字的意思嗎？

Henry：Bail是“保釋（金）”，例如：

He hasn't posted bail for her.

（他並沒有為她交保釋金。）

There is a hearing today to set bail.

（今天有一個決定保釋金金額的聽證會。）

但如果法官不讓犯人保釋，我們又怎麼說？

趙Sir：可這樣說：

The judge is expected to refuse the suspect bail.

（法官應(yīng)該不會讓該嫌疑犯保釋。）

Henry：除了名詞（noun）用法，bail也可作動詞（verb）嗎？

趙Sir：可以。Bail用作動詞有幾個意思：

一、“保釋”，例如：

Three of the youths were bailed.

（其中三名年輕人被保釋。）

二、“幫助……擺脫困境（尤指財務(wù)困難）”，例如：

The government has already bailed the project out once before.

（政府以前已給該工程紓困一次。）

三、“（自船）抽水以免下沉”，例如：

When the storm rose on the lake, we had to bail out to reach the shore safely.

（湖上刮起風(fēng)暴時，我們必須把船上的水抽掉以便安全到達(dá)岸邊。）

Henry：若不把水bail out，船或會下沉了。Bale又如何？

趙Sir：Bale是“（紙、棉花或乾草等的）大捆、大包”，例如：

There was a bale of hay in the shed.

（在小屋中有一捆乾草。）

動詞bale則指“將……打成大包（/大捆）”，例如：

Once hay has been cut and baled, it has to go through some chemical processes.

（乾草一旦被收割及捆紮後，便會進行一些化學(xué)加工。）

Henry：乾草原來要經(jīng)化學(xué)加工才可賣給市場的。
