In the clear and crisp autumn days, the gold fields gave off strong fragrances of ripe crops heralding the bumper harvests that brought happiness to all hearts.
Li Qiushi’s 75th birthday was coincided with the coming National Day,and he visited Beijing with his family. We met happily each other, and in the friendly conversation I found that the philatelic passion of my friend was as strong as in the early years.
It was more than 20 years ago,I got to know Li Runfang,my bosom friend renamed Li Qiushi now.At that time,he was the principal of the No.1 Vocational High Middle School of Zhaodong County,Heilongjiang Province. With fine management and outstanding achievement, the school and Li Qiushi were rated as the advanced unit and model educator on several occasions at the provincial and municipal levels. The school became known far and wide, and even Doctor Shards, former president, and Professor Spaulding of the Social Management Institute of Tennessee University,USA,paid a special tour to the school.
Li Qiushi was among those first given the academic title of High Grade Middle School Teacher in China, and though busy in work,he had insisted his hobby of stamp collecting from his middle school years. In the chaotic period of the Cultural Revolution,to avoid to be labeled with “feudalism, capitalism, and revisionism”,he hid his love of stamp collecting in the heart and his collection under the floor, but it was his love and collection shining in the dark and guiding him through those hard days.
Li Qiushi owns a rich collection with profound studies.Insightful and vigorous,he is a man of energy and competence. At the first stamp auction of Heilongjiang Province in 1987,he spent 1,680 yuan,a skyhigh price then, for a successful bid of more than 20 souvenir and miniature sheets including T.41M Study Science from Childhood,J.25M National Science Conference, the two overprints of J.42M Postage Stamp Exhibition of the People’s Republic of China in Hong Kong, and other sheets. Not long after his purchase, the prices for these sheets shot up unimaginably.
Li Qiushi accomplished outstanding achievements in philately. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of founding of PRC in 1989,Heilongjiang Province held a grand philatelic exhibition, and the collection titled China Definitives(1950-1954)compiled by Mr.Li Qiushi for the first time won the first grade prize at the exhibition.Wu Fenggang,a senior philatelist, wrote him at the spot an inscription reading “Collect all for saving, and cultivate mind for collecting”.In Oct.the same year, the collection was sent to China National Philatelic Exhibition held in Beijing and won a silver medal.Through persistent pursuit, painstaking study, and diligent work,he became a well-known figure step by step in the philatelic circles. He held posts of the vice president of Zhaodong Philatelic Society, president of Zhaodong Youth Philatelic Society, and a member of the council and academic committee of Heilongjiang Philatelic Association.
After my move from Heilongjiang to Beijing,we seldom met each other for a period, but I often read his articles in philatelic journals and newspapers.Later,I was informed that he moved from Heilongjiang to Zibo, and then settled in Qingdao of Shandong Province.Though moved from place to place,he never relaxed his pursuit of stamp collecting;and no matter in hot summer or cold winter,he would rush a mass philatelic activity whenever it was held in spite of far distance and travel means. He considered these activities as rare chances to exchange philatelic knowledge and to reach mutual understandings between fellow collectors. On invitation,he launched philatelic forums at Qingdao TV station, gave lectures in local philatelic societies, and guided exhibit compilations at homes of fellow collectors, all of which showed that he believed philately is his career, and he should practice what he preached that “Strive to popularize philatelic knowledge as an obligatory duty and to upgrade collections for better outcomes”.
His collection of China Definitives with Denominations in Old Renminbi(1950-1954)won a grand vermeil medal at the national philatelic exhibition of Chongqing in 1997,a gold medal with special prize at the national philatelic exhibition of Hangzhou in 2010,a vermeil medal at the 15th International Philatelic Exhibition of Hong Kong in 2001,and another vermeil medal at the 29th Asian International Philatelic Exhibition of Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia in 2014.His another collection of China Definitives with Denominations in New Renminbi(1955-1975)debuted at the national philatelic exhibition in 2002 and won a grand vermeil medal with judge’s felicitation at the First China National Aged Philatelic Exhibition of Guangzhou and got a grand vermeil medal with special prize at the national philatelic exhibition of Changsha in 2014.Encouraged,assisted,and supported by him, several collections on traditional themes by beginners of Shandong won gold and silver medals at the national stamp shows, the summary of which was his words that “I arrived from the black land to the yellow, the origin of the Chinese civilization, and to till on this fertile field is my lifetime honor.”
In these days,Li Qiushi became a member of the academic committees of Zibo and Qingdao philatelic societies as well as Shandong Philatelic Association. He was also a member of the guiding group for traditional philately led by the Working Committee of National Philatelic Exhibitions under the ACPF.At the meeting marking the 20th anniversary of establishment of the ACPC,Li Qiushi was awarded again the title of advanced national philatelic worker, and it was happy to know that Li Qiushi was elected an ACPF fellow at the 5th session of 6th council of the ACPF in 2011.
With students all over the country,Li Qiushi was a respectable educator with nearly 40 years of experience. As a dedicated stamp lover,he specialized in definitive stamps of New China.Through continuous collecting and study of philatelic items and academic findings in the past 20 years or more,he worked out a monograph titled An Illustrated Catalogue of China Definitives(1950-2013).With unique features, new findings, historical values, and practical use,the catalogue fills in a gap in the field of definitive stamp studies, and its publication will be welcomed by the mass collectors.
To follow Li Qiushi’s life path in philately, many would like to ask where his ardent hobby came from.He once answered frankly with a smile that “it was for love, for a girl classmate who helped him to fulfill a dream in the senior middle school days.”To stamp collecting, each collector has his own understanding in depth, height, and width. To comment on this topic again 50 years later,Li Qiushi said with deep feelings that “The base of success in philately is diligent study and unceasing pursuit, the key factor is self-confidence,while the correct way is to explore harder,to study deeper, and to input more passions.”These words contained rich life philosophy and revealed the truth of philately. Therefore,I am deeply convinced that on the philatelic road,Li Qiushi will forge ahead, keep his philatelic sword ever sharp, blaze new paths in exploration, and get more fruits of success.
