【Content Summary】

The main content of this chapter consists of three parts. First, the basic concepts of graduate education, including“What is graduate education?”, the connotation, characteristics and mission of graduate education. Second, the development of graduate education, explaining the five development phases of graduate education in China since the reform and openingup. The five phases are Initial Exploration Phase, Restoration and Development Phase, Steady Development Phase, Rapid Development Phase, and Connotation Development Phase. The third is the relationship between graduate education and society, focusing on the action and reaction relationship between graduate education and politics, economy and culture.
