1.square [skwZE] v. a) to set straight or at approximate right angles挺直,挺起:square one’s shoulders挺直身子,挺起胸膛。b) to win a point or game so that you have now won the same number of points or games as the other team or player使打成平局,打平:India won the second match to square the series at one each.印度隊第二局戰勝,使雙方成平局。
2.discreetly [dis5kri:tli] adv. carefully謹慎地,小心地:The bell captain hovered discreetly out of sight.侍者領班已小心翼翼地溜之大吉了。
3.reserve [ri5zE:v] n. a) self-restrain in expression, the habit of not showing one’s feelings or thoughts矜持,拘謹;寡言:She overcame her own natural reserve.她戰勝了自己一貫的拘謹。b) a supply of something kept to be used if it is needed貯藏;儲備:We must keep back a reserve of food.我們必須貯存一些食品。
4.whereabout [5(h)wZErE5baut] n. the place where somebody or something is下落,行蹤,所在之處:He showed great reluctance to reveal his whereabouts.他極不情愿透露自己的行蹤。
5.anthology [An5WClEdVi] n. a collection of literary pieces, such as poems, short stories or plays(詩、文等的)選集:I have an anthology of modern quotations.我有一本現代名言集萃。
6.grope [^rEup] v. to search blindly or uncertainly摸索,搜尋:Ginny groped for her glasses on the bedside table.金尼在床邊的桌子上摸索自己的眼鏡。

1.frontier [5frQntjE] n. a) the area along an international border邊境,國界:Sweden has frontiers with Norway and Finland.瑞典同挪威,芬蘭相鄰。b) an area where people have never lived before, that not much is known about, especially in the western US before the 20th century(尤指19世紀美國西部的)開發地區的邊緣,邊遠地區:Areas near the frontier were rough and lawless in the old days.過去邊遠地區混亂不堪,而且沒有法律。c) the limits of what is known about something尚待開發的領域,尖端;前沿:They are highly interested in the frontiers of science.他們對于科學的新領域有濃厚的興趣。
2.collapse [kE5lAps] v. a) to fall down inward suddenly倒塌,崩潰:The collapse of the bridge forced the ferry back into operation.橋跨了,只好又使用渡船。b) a sudden failure in the way something works, so that it cannot continue垮臺,失敗:His business was in danger of collapse.他的生意面臨倒閉的危險。
3.grim [^rim] adj. a) unrelenting or rigid無情的,嚴酷的,嚴厲的:His expression was grim when he told them they had lost their jobs.當他告訴他們說他們已被解雇時,他的表情十分冷酷。b) very bad, ugly, or unpleasant討厭的,糟糕的:They painted a grim picture of what life used to be like there.
4.enquiry [in5kwaiEri] n. the act of inquiring; a question, a query詢問,質問,疑問:Thank you for your enquiry about my health.謝謝你問候我的健康狀況。
5.strive [straiv] v. to struggle or fight forcefully與…奮斗,抗爭,搏斗:The swimmer was striving against the current.游泳者正在和激浪搏斗。
6.distress [dis5tres] n. a) anxiety or mental suffering巨大的悲痛,不幸,危難:Send out a distress signal; the ship is sinking.發出求救信號吧,船正在下沉。b) a feeling of extreme unhappiness悲痛,痛苦,憂傷,苦惱:Nothing could alleviate his distress.什么都不能減輕他的痛苦。
7.exile [5eksail, 5e^z-] n. enforced removal from one’s native country放逐,充軍,流放:Napoleon was sent into exile on an island.拿破侖被流放到一個島上。
8.uphold [Qp5hEuld] v. a) to raise or support支持,維護:We will loyally uphold the principles of the United Nations.我們將忠實地維護聯合國的原則。b) if a court upholds a decision made by another court, it states that the decision was correct維持,確認(原判、裁決等):The conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal.地方法院堅持原判決。
9.dignity [5di^niti] n. the quality or state of being worthy of esteem or respect品格高尚,高貴,尊貴:Although she is very poor, she has not lost her dignity.她雖然很窮,但沒有失去她的尊嚴。
10.lofty [5lC(:)fti] adj. a) elevated in character, exalted品德高尚的,崇高的:Young people should have lofty ideals and aims.年輕人應該有崇高的理想和目標。b) very high and impressive高聳的,極高的:The Alps mountains, lofty and rugged, stood like an impassable wall before him巍峨崎嶇的阿爾卑斯山,像一座無法越過的高墻屹立在他面前。
11.endure [in5djuE] v. a) to carry on through, despite hardships忍耐,忍受:I cannot endure her rudeness any longer.我再也不能忍受她的無禮了。b) to remain alive or continue to exist for a long time持續,持久,堅持下去:We can’t endure much longer in the desert without water.我們沒有水無法在沙漠中堅持長久。
12.perish [5periF] v. a) to pass from existence, disappear gradually凋謝,毀滅,消亡:Hundreds of sheep perished that year because of drought.那年由于干旱,幾百頭羊突然死去。b) if rubber or leather perishes, it decays損壞,腐爛:Continuous washing has perished the rubber.不斷地洗滌使橡皮筋失去彈性。
13.supplant [sE5plB:nt] v. to displace and substitute for another排擠掉,代替:In most offices, the typewriter has now been supplanted by the computer.當今許多辦公室里,打字機已被電腦取代。
