1.puritan [5pjuEritEn] n. a person who practices or preaches a more strict moral code than that which exists清教徒:His dissolute life is inconsistent with his Puritan upbringing.他的放蕩生活和他的清教徒教養(yǎng)相悖。
2.overshadow [7EuvE5FAdEu] v. a) to make insignificant by comparison; to dominate使(某人)相形見絀或黯然失色:Mary was sometimes overshadowed by the more talkative members of the family.有時家中更健談的人使瑪麗顯得黯然失色。b) to make an occasion or period of time less enjoyable by making people feel sad or worried使(某事物)令人不快或減少樂趣:His disappearance overshadowed the family.他的失蹤給家庭蒙上了一層陰影。

13.blaspheme [blAs5fi:m] v. to swear, to use words which show a lack of respect for God or religion褻瀆,辱罵,中傷:After that I ceased to blaspheme, but I cursed my father.從那以后,我不再詛咒上帝,而是詛咒我的父親。
14.scan [skAn] v. a) to examine closely細(xì)查,審視,觀測,嚴(yán)密監(jiān)視:The detective scanned every bit of evidence.偵探仔細(xì)檢查了每一樣證據(jù)。b) read roughly粗略地讀;瀏覽;翻閱:I scanned the newspaper for the information I needed.我瀏覽報紙尋找自己需要的信息。

1.thrill [Wril] n. a sudden strong feeling of excitement and pleasure, or the thing that makes you feel this強(qiáng)烈的興奮、恐懼或快樂感:His speech caused a thrill among the audience.他的演說引起了聽眾的極大興奮。
2.multiplication [7mQltipli5keiFEn] n. a method of calculating in which you add a number to itself a particular number of times乘法:We had multiplication tables drilled into us at school.以前我們上學(xué)得反復(fù)背誦乘法表。
3.flatter [5flAtE] v. a) give a feeling of pleasure or honor to sb.奉承,使高興:I was very flattered by your invitation to talk at the conference.承蒙你邀我在會上講話,深感榮幸。b) to make someone look as attractive as they can使顯得更漂亮:That dress really flatters your figure.這件衣服使你身材顯得更嬌美。
4.sensational [sen5seiFEnEl] adj. a) intended to interest, excite, or shock people - used in order to show disapproval(報章等) 嘩眾取寵的;聳人聽聞的:a sensational account of a murder謀殺案聳人聽聞的報道;b) very interesting, exciting, and surprising轟動性的,引起嘩然的:The arrival of a taxi was unusual enough; an unknown woman getting out of it was sensational.來了輛出租車就夠奇怪的了,從里面出來一名陌生女子就更引人注目。
5.triumph [5traiEmf] v. joy or satisfaction at being successful or victorious成功或勝利的喜歡,滿足:I could detect no triumph in his eyes.我在他眼里讀不出勝利的喜悅。
6.vanish [5vAniF] v. a) disappear completely and suddenly消失,消散:With a wave of his hand, the magician made the rabbit vanish.魔術(shù)師手一揮兔子便不見了。b) extinguish不復(fù)存在,絕跡,消亡:Many types of animal have now vanished from the earth.許多動物物種現(xiàn)已從地球上絕跡。
7.riot [5raiEt] n. a) a situation in which a large crowd of people are behaving in a violent and uncontrolled way, especially when they are protesting about something暴亂,騷亂:They ran riot through the town after the defeat of their team.自己的球隊輸了以后,他們在小鎮(zhèn)上到處撒野。b) richness or abundance極度豐富:The garden was a riot of color.花園里色彩繽紛。
8.a(chǎn)ffection [E5fekFEn] n. a feeling of liking or love and caring喜愛,愛,熱愛:If the interviewer asked about your family or school speak with loyalty and affection.當(dāng)面試官提到你的家庭和學(xué)校時,你說話時要顯得忠誠和熱愛。
9.exaltation [7e^zC:l5teiFEn] n. a very strong feeling of happiness極度的興奮:Her mood of exaltation united her with the others, with the whole marching movement.極度的興奮把她和其他的人,和整個游行示威運動聯(lián)系起來。
