Chapter I　Remarkable Changes to a Weak Country’s Poorly-developed Ports

Since its founding over 70 years ago, China has come a long way in the building of modern ports and put in place a world-leading port system. In 2020, there are eight Chinese ports among the top 10 global ports in terms of cargo throughput, and seven among the top 10 ports in terms of container throughput. Chinese ports have led the world for years in terms of both cargo throughput and container throughput capacity.

The following part shall focus on the great journey of port development in China over the past 70-plus years. Some of the port-related businesses may be traced back to more than 100 years ago.
