My coffee habit developed in my mid-20s. I was working at the time as a reporter in Central America, where they produce some of the world’s finest beans. A local friend taught me to drink it strong and black, with plenty of sugar. That became my go-to formula for decades.

This began to change a couple of months ago when I felt a painful burning sensation between my throat and breastbone. When I saw the cardiologist two weeks later, he immediately ordered a procedure to check and potentially fix my heart.
