Orion Configuration Wizard
The Orion Configuration Wizard handles configuring every single aspect of the Orion NPM product, including the Windows Server itself. Since our Windows Server and SQL Server instance is in order, it is time to launch the Orion Configuration Wizard.
After launching the Orion NPM Configuration Wizard for the first time, a licensing screen appears asking you to click on one of three different buttons. I usually recommend holding off on activating the software until the last possible moment. I do this just in case there is a problem with an installation, if I need to refund a purchase, or if I need to purchase more licensing. But above all, I wait so that I can verify that all settings and configurations are in order.
Note
Perform the following steps while logged into the Windows Server with the same SQL Server service account described when installing SQL server in the previous chapter. Ensure the service account has administrative permissions to the Windows Server where you will be installing Orion NPM. Administrative permissions to this server can be removed when you are finished with the Orion Configuration Wizard.
- To launch the Orion Configuration Wizard, navigate to Start | All Programs | SolarWinds Orion | Configuration and Auto Discovery | Configuration Wizard.
- The Licensing Information window will appear. Click on Continue Evaluation to continue. We will activate the software later in Chapter 8, Maintenance.
- The Configuration Wizard will display a warning when IIS is not installed. This is the normal behavior. Click on Yes to continue.
- After a few moments, the Welcome to the SolarWinds Configuration Wizard screen will appear. Click on Next to continue.
- At the Database Settings screen, choose Use Windows Authentication. Click on Next when ready to proceed.
- Choose Create a new database then click on Next. It is suggested to use the default database name SolarWindsOrion for new installations.
- At the Database Account screen, you must define a local SQL Server account that will bind to the SolarWinds Orion NPM installation. This will be a new user account with rights only to the new SolarWinds Orion database. The account will be created in the local SQL user login account database. Since this is a new installation, choose Create a new account, enter a name and a password for the account, then click on Next to continue.
Note
Orion NPM does not support domain user accounts for SQL Server authentication. You must choose to create a new account, or choose from an existing one that is local to the SQL login account database. For more information on how to manually create a login account for your SQL Server, see the Microsoft TechNet article at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337562.aspx.
- Choose the following Orion website settings.
- IP Address: Using All Unassigned will make the Orion NPM website the default site in IIS. If you have multiple IP addresses assigned to this server, choose one that will be hosting the Orion website.
- Port: It is recommended to leave it with the default port 80.
- Website Root Directory: It is recommended to leave this with the default setting.
- Windows Authentication: Choose Yes to enable logging in using a Windows user account (local or domain), or No to only allow login accounts that are local to Orion.
- When prompted to create the website root directory, click on Yes.
- At the Service Settings screen, ensure that all options are checked and click on Next.
- Click on Yes to disable the Windows SNMP Trap services and enable the SolarWinds Trap Service.
- Click on Back if you need to make any changes. Otherwise, click on Next to finish the configuration.
- The wizard will take several minutes to complete. Click on Finish to close the Orion Configuration Wizard.
Congratulations! If everything went smoothly, Internet Explorer will automatically open the login page of the Orion dashboard when the Configuration Wizard closes. Remember, you can always come back at a later time and launch the Orion Configuration Wizard if you want to enable or disable any features of Orion NPM.

Logging into the dashboard for the first time is simple. Use the admin
ID with a blank password. The first screen you will be presented with is the Network Sonar Wizard. But first, we will discuss the Orion Website Administration page.
