In this chapter, you learned how to get data from files and put data back into the files. Specifically you learned how to get data from plain and XML files, put data into text and Excel files, and get information from the operating system, for example, command-line arguments. Besides, you saw an introduction to Kettle variables and learned to run transformations from a terminal with the Pan command.

You are now ready to learn more advanced and very useful operations, for example, sorting or filtering data. This will be covered in the next chapter.
