Becoming a movie-making genius...almost!
Alright, we're not going to turn you into a fully clued-up movie producer just yet. However, you don't have to be one with the following video-editing tools. One of the most painful experiences we had while researching this book was navigating through the maze of compression codecs, frame rates, aspect ratios, and other thorny issues that make digital moving-image production such a nightmare.
In this book, we will produce animations that are suitable for upload to popular video streaming sites such as YouTube or Vimeo. For this, we will use the following two dedicated tools:
We will look at the details of the process of making a movie in Chapter 10, Animations, and also introduce a few other tools to make our lives as movie producers easier.
Why can't I just use the output from SketchUp?
The raw animated output from SketchUp will invariably be one of the following:
- Strongly compressed with visual artifacts and noise
- Impractically large in size
- Limited to the artificial SketchUp styles
Following the easy steps in Chapter 10, Animations, with the software you're about to download will sort out all three problems. You will be completely amazed at how much the file size can be reduced with no perceivable reduction in quality.
VirtualDub
VirtualDub is the answer to most of our moving image woes on Windows. It's free; this is unbelievable as the next best available software is Adobe After Effects or Autodesk Combustion, both retailing at around $1000. VirtualDub will allow you to composite still images together to form a video, with the use of a whole host of filters thrown into the bargain. The GUI of VirtualDub Version 1.8.6 is similar to the one shown in the following screenshot:

VirtualDub doesn't have an install program, so you will have to save it somewhere and create a desktop shortcut to it manually. Here's how to do it:
- Get the latest stable release of VirtualDub from http://www.virtualdub.org. Just follow the links to the download mirror. Do not download the 64-bit version even if you are on a 64-bit system!
- Save the ZIP file to your hard drive.
- Extract the
VirtualDub
folder from the archive. - Move the entire
VirtualDub
folder to a permanent location on your hard drive (for example,C:\Program Files
). - Open the folder and right-click on the
VirtualDub.exe
file. - Select Send to | Desktop (create shortcut).
- A new icon will be created on your desktop.
Mac alternatives
If you work on a Mac, chances are that you already have an application that can convert a set of images into a video. QuickTime Pro can be used for this and is very popular on Mac. If you don't have suitable software and also don't want to spend any money on new software just to create videos, you will still be able to generate animations with the free app Zeitraffer from the Apple App Store. Just type zeitraffer
in the search field in the App Store, and download it to your Mac.
HandBrake
We will use HandBrake to convert the animation from VirtualDub into a compressed streaming video format that is suitable for websites such as YouTube. HandBrake is available for both Windows and Mac OS X platforms. Just head to http://handbrake.fr, and download and install the latest version.
