Edge devices and gateways have embedded software, or firmware, that is inherent in their design, but may require periodic updates, most particularly for security, but also for performance, bug fixes, or other concerns. The network, and architectural pattern, needs to enable access for upgrading of components without physically accessing the device and be adaptable enough to incorporate new protocols, as well as backward and forward version compatibility.
