Chapter 4. Managing Your Connections: Making the most of your Sametime Contacts

With your Sametime client up and running, you'd like to start chatting with your colleagues. To do so, you need to add their names to your contact list. Once someone is in your contact list, you can start communicating and collaborating with them in a number of different ways.

In this chapter, you'll learn how to:

  • Add and remove people from your contact list
  • Understand the different types of directory entries you might encounter
  • Create nicknames for the people on your contact list
  • Categorize your contacts into different groups
  • Sort your contacts and groups
  • Manage groups and contacts between different types of Sametime clients
  • Use "type-ahead" on your contact list
  • Display a contact's business card
  • Manage your online presence when you're on Sametime
  • Create group chats between three or more contacts

Managing your contacts

Let's start managing your contact list by adding the names of those colleagues or friends you would like to chat with on a regular basis. By adding them to your contact list, you can easily see their availability status whether they are online and available to chat, offline, or online but away from their desk.

In our examples, we're going to assume that you're a new user just beginning to use Sametime and starting to set up your contact list. We're going to walk you through the different processes and tricks that you can use to get you up and running to chat with other people.

Some usage scenarios include the following:

  • George is a new Sametime user and has no contacts in his contact list but he wants to start contacting users quickly.
  • Susan has many users but she wants to sort them alphabetically and arrange them into groups. She also wants to have some flexibility for displaying how the users appear.
  • Rob travels for his job and works from multiple workstations. He wants to be sure that if he makes changes on one workstation, his contact list will be up-to-date on the other workstation.
  • Chia has many groups in his contact list. He wants to chat with multiple users at one time in a group window as he's working on a group project requiring input from all team members.
