Alps Snow World
Shenzhen has no snow, much less ice-this is how it is year round. However, with many of the residents of the people hailing from the northern portions of the country, there is a market for those who miss the weather of their hometowns. This led to the construction of the country's largest indoor snow park: Window of the World's "Alps Snow World". Adults can slide down a five-storey slope, and children can enjoy a 20-metre mini-slope, as well as snowball fights. Visitors to the city can avoid the scorching heat here; just take a step inside and let your spirit fly.

Lurkers in the Bush
The Chinese Koel is a bird that lurks in the foliage, calling out day at night, but is rarely seen. The variety common in Shenzhen is that of the Southern Chinese subspecies. Every day as the sun rises it lets out shrill and forlorn cry, waking those sleeping nearby. In the summer it's often about in the dense trees of parks and forests, and its call can be heard everywhere. Ornithologists say that for the koel to appear in a city, the environment must be exceptionally good. The bird is rare, and has been placed on the red list for endangered species.

Smoke from the Temple
Mazu, the goddess of the ocean, is widely worshiped by the local coastal fishers. The temple in Chiwan dedicated to her was built in the Song Dynasty, and was a stop on Zheng He's route when he sailed the ocean in the Ming Dynasty. It also became an important site on the Maritime Silk Road. Lu Yan, in Hong Kong Memories notes: "As the temple to Mazu at Chiwan is large in size, on the twenty-third day of the third lunar month, people from Hong Kong and Kowloon as well as those living upon the water come to the temple to celebrate her birthday." Even today large curls of smoke rise there from the incense being burnt in offering.

Feng shui from the Wetlands
The name "Shenzhen" was first used in the 8th year of the Yongle Emperor's reign in the Ming Dynasty (1410). "Shen" means deep and "zhen" is a ditch between fields. Cantonese people are widely superstitious, and believe that the city, both situated on the sea and abutted by mountains, has excellent Feng shui. A number of wetlands that have been discovered are protected, with reeds and grasses growing thickly and birds flying about. Modern scientists explain that they function like the kidneys of the city, regulating the environment and improving water quality, an important function for the urban environment after the establishment of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
Dahuaxing Temple
Dahuaxing Temple towers over Sanzhoutian. The "da", meaning big, refers not to the size of the temple, but rather to its statute of Avalokitesvara. The statute of her seated upon a lotus is the world's largest, and the only one depicting her four incarnations. People in the city climb the mountain to visit when they have time. Listening to the beat of the drums and smelling the thick smell of incense, you feel as if your heart has been purified. Standing upon the mountain looking out over the sea, you feel all your worries and troubles float away in the wind.

Shenzhen Garden
Shenzhen is noted for its very high degree of green coverage. The city has over 1,000 parks, and more than fifty-percent vegetative coverage, making it full of natural beauty. In 2017, the 19th International Botanical Congress was conducted in Shenzhen. It is the largest conference in the world of botany, with the highest level of academic discussion-the "Olympics" of the botanical world. The congress has been conducted for a century, and this was the first time it took place in China.

A Walk Along the Beach
Shenzhen has two plank pathways along the ocean, one of which is the world's longest. In the east of the city is the Dapeng Bay Plank Pathway, which originates in the east at Shatoujiao and terminates at Beizaijiao, for a total length of 20 kilometres. It has a plank pathway, and a cement pathway, and can be walked or biked upon. The other plank pathway is in the west, at Shenzhen Bay, opposite the Mipu preserve in Hong Kong. It runs along coast, undulating like the waves of the sea, winding alongside the mangroves. In the vast blue sea and sky migratory birds fly, providing accompaniment to the landscape.

Hongfa Temple
Hongfa Temple was built in 1983, making it the first new temple built after the founding of the People's Republic of China. In the context of opening up and reform, as it is near Hong Kong and Macao and faces towards southeast Asia, the China Buddhist Association had great hopes for it, to make it a first-rate Chinese Buddhist cultural site, and establish links with Buddhist associations abroad. Formally opened to the people in 1992, the 44th generation Linji practitioner Ben Huan served as abbot. He passed in the seated position in 2012 at 106 years of age, and some sarira remained from cremation of his body.

Mangrove Forest
The expansive forests of this subtropical evergreen tree, interspersed with shrubs, function as embankments that shield against waves. Located on the north bank of Shenzhen Bay, they look out across the sea at Hong Kong. In 1984, a protective zone for them was formally established. Prince Philip of the United Kingdom and Prince Henrik of Denmark have both visited for birdwatching, remarking that the site is a "green pearl".

Ecological Park
For people to coexist with nature peacefully, we must follow its course. The ecological park in Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) follows this principle, with human and natural vistas following the native shape of the land. Although there are buildings to the sides, it still feels as if one is deep in the mountains, with hills, streams, waterfalls, reeds, the shade of trees and flowers all about. You may be in the city, but you're isolated from the clamour and noise. This is a place full of feelings of poetry and distance, a nice place to let yourself go.

Dutch Village
The Holland Flower Village in Shenzhen is a place that combines the culture, creativity, relaxation and art of Shenzhen. It was formerly the Nanshan Floral World, and was opened in its current form in 2011. It has the three Dutch essentials: clogs, windmills and tulips. There are many flower shops here, and the sculptures of tulips are all about. There is also a small lake full of reeds in the village, with calm water only slightly rippling. With water, lotus flowers, and green leaves, this is a great spot to take pictures.
Lizhi Park
Autumn in Shenzhen can't really be called autumn, as it still has the feeling of summer. Blue skies, green grasses, bright flowers, clear lakes-beauty is all around. All kinds of flowers bloom in the park, and fruit hang from the branches of trees. Green grass flourishes. Lizhi Park is an excellent place to go to appreciate the osmanthus blooms, which open in early autumn, brilliant yellow with a wonderful fragrance. One feels refreshed in the heart and gladdened in the mind as the soft breeze blows.

Lychees Blooming
At the start of summer, the recently-opened Xiangmi Park, with an area of 100,000 square metres, becomes a sea of lychee flowers. Lychees are a local product in Shenzhen; they bloom in March and April, and bear fruit in May and June. The flowers are fragrant, and the fruit sweet-a true treat. The inflorescences of the lychee trees are dense clusters. Standing on the plank pathway in Xiangmi Park, surrounded by lychee flowers, you're drenched in their fragrance, as bees and butterflies fly about.
A Dreamy Atmosphere
A group of Ursula butterflies come here to take a rest on the route of their long migration. They gather together on the tree branches, occasionally fluttering their wings, making a beautiful sound as they fly about, their movements resembling blooming flowers. This is the Butterfly Valley of Mount Maluan. The author of Notes of Landscape in Shenzhen Nan Zhaoxu says: "In November, I can come with my comrades here to see if the tens of thousands of butterflies have returned."

A Long Blue Curve
Shenzhen is an enviable coastal city. The surface of the water ripples as mighty waves crash against the coast, rising and falling with the tides. The coast of the Dapeng Peninsula has been listed as one of the eight great coasts in China by the magazine Chinese National Geography. Dongchong and Xichong are both "golden beaches". However in modern times, a lot of the coast has been filled in, built upon, or occupied. We need to learn how to treasure these landscapes.

Insects Named by a Local
Graduate of Shenzhen University Huang Baoping is an insect chaser. On Pingshan District and the Dapeng Peninsula, he found two new species of pselaphids, one named for his mother, and one for his grandmother. This was the first time that a Shenzhen local had named a new insect species. Working at the scale he does, a puddle of water is practically an ocean.

Bougainvillea
Under the hot sun and the intense rain of typhoons, the bougainvillea still grows beautiful and strong in Shenzhen. Bougainvillea glabra is the city flower of Shenzhen, with large, fiery-red blooms. Originally from South America, one can simply snap off a branch and plant it to propagate the plant. Just like the people who come to Shenzhen from all over the country, once it takes root, it can withstand rain and strong wind, and thrives with a will to survive.

Mountain City
There are countless mountains to climb and rivers to follow-the words of Tang Dynasty poet Cui Hao seem almost as if they were meant to describe Shenzhen. Aside from the long coastline, Shenzhen also has a large number of peaks and valleys: Mounts Wutong, Bijia, Guanyin, Yangtai, Maluan… There are so many different mountains with different characters here. If you want to know the character of each one, you must walk it with your own footsteps. Shenzhen is one of the earliest Chinese cities in which hiking and exploration became popular in modern times.

Natural Feelings
Shenzhen-based naturist Nan Zhaoxu has so much to say about Shenzhen: a 600-year-old banyan tree, the various birds that fly freely in the sky, the blankets of vegetation upon the mountains, green year round, all the kinds of coral that grow in the sea. He has spent more than a decade exploring the mountains and waters of Shenzhen, writing a book Notes of Landscape in Shenzhen, using pictures and text to describe in detail all the green spots of Shenzhen and his feelings of love and worry for them.

Snow in Shenzhen
Snow is like something out of a fairy tale for the people of Shenzhen. This tale came to Shenzhen in 2016, when the weather forecasters predicted snow. The roads below Mount Wutong were jammed with traffic, everyone summiting to enjoy the "snow". The meteorological agency noted that in fact it was technically rime that had formed after a low temperature period, small white snow-like balls of ice clinging to the vegetation. People posted pictures of little snowmen they made out of them online, making the fairy tale a reality for others to witness.

Clouds on Mount Wutong
Man of letters Yu An wrote about the smoky clouds on Mount Wutong, their beautiful appearance evoking thoughts in the autumn as they drifted about. The mountain is in fact most beautiful after a rain, with green everywhere that's shrouded in mists, small drops of dew cleaning to the leaves everywhere. Walking the mountain at this time, one feels as if in a trance, as if one has entered a fairy's home in our mortal realm. It's for this reason that Mount Wutong is the foremost of the "eight sights of Shenzhen".

Rhododendron Moulmainense
At the end of March, Fenghuang Terrace, which has been green all winter, becomes flecked with points of red everywhere. From the middle of the mountain to its peak, more than 3 acres of land are covered with the blooming rhododendrons, forming a striking sea of red flowers. This half-month-long sight draws many people from the city to admire it. As you walk in this high-up place far from the city, you look out over the sea of flowers as your spirit flies.

Acacia Forest
Acacias can form both forests and gardens. At the Yinhu Resort Village in Shenzhen, there is a small park forested with acacias. Although the beacon tower at the peak is man-made, it still shows the traces of years of wear. From here one can look out over the entire lake into which spring water slowly flows from the mountain, passing quietly through the park. Time passes, and even visitors to the resort village become few, the water continues to flow and the forest continues to stand.
Switching Places
Safari Park Shenzhen is the first free-range zoo in the country, where people are in cages and beasts roam freely. It's an exciting experience for the visitors. It's also the first site in China to combine a zoo, a botanical garden, and a science park. In the north there are continuous green mountains, in the south giant rock sculptures of the animals, in the east a lychee tree forest, and in the west the Xili Lake. There are all kinds of wonderful things to see here.

Interlaken Is Here
If you don't have the time or money to visit Europe, you can visit the Interlaken Village in Shenzhen, where there are mountains, water, birds, and clouds. You can ride the small forest train, stay at the luxurious resort hotel, and feel Swiss culture in every corner of the complex. It really is like travelling through time and space being here.

Old Trees
There are some quite impressive trees in the both old and new city of Shenzhen. The oldest of them is a 615-year-old banyan in Nanyuan Village; the oldest maples are more than four centuries old in Bantianyun Village. Writer Kahlil Gibran remarked that trees could write history just in the way that people could. The people of the city write their histories in words, and the trees stand there as quiet testaments to the passage of time.

Cuizhu Park
Bamboo, along with the pine and plum, is one of the "three friends of winter". It stands tall and strong against the winds and ravages of time. There is a nice, quiet place in the urban centre-Cuizhu ("green bamboo") Park. Within there are many bamboo trees growing with dense foliage, the sight of which refreshes the onlooker. Deep green leaves filter the sunlight, making for a wonderful scene, and shielding visitors from the noise of the city. Taking a slow walk through the park amidst the tall stalks, one experiences a different feeling. Qing Dynasty poet Zheng Xie wrote a poem about such scenes: "Trunks support branches from which leaves rise. I keep to myself as to not disturb the bees and butterflies."

Back to the Past
Freeze-frames of time before humanity are recorded in the fossil record. The Shenzhen Museum of Palaeontology is situated next to the Fairy Lake Botanical Garden's petrified forest. It's constructed in the form of a giant stone castle, and displays more than a thousand petrified objects, testaments to the past. The entire museum looks like a primeval landscape, with dragonflies and lizards fossils all about. Walking in, you feel as if you've entered a previous age.

Xin'an Ancient City
The Xin'an Ancient City is also known as the Nantou Ancient City, and still has its old, ancient south gate. Xianqian Street is one of the nine thoroughfares within; the city used to be known as "Nine Streets" in common parlance. The origins of the site can be traced back to the first year of the Yuanfeng Emperor's reign in the Han Dynasty (110 BC). In ancient times it was an important defensive location, as well as a site for commerce. It can be seen as the root of Shenzhen, as well as the origin of the history of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. It's situated near the Lingdingyang Estuary. It now rests calmly within the city, a site that combines the modern and ancient, the wild and calm.

Tea in Sanzhoutian
Time brings great changes to the world. Sanzhoutian became famous in 1900 during the Boxer War, and in 1958 was submerged after the construction of a reservoir. It's now the OCT Tea Valley Scenic Area. Encircled by mountains, it has unique climate. Tea trees grow densely upon the surrounding slopes, and tea enthusiasts scramble for the Oolong tea that grows upon them. This is a wonderful place to have a cup of tea, enjoy the calm night breeze, look out over the lush landscape, and appreciate a tea ceremony, taking in the music, as if you are in paradise.
Evergreen Resort
There is a wonderful site at the lower reaches of Mount Danan that is easily ignored or forgotten; famous singer Na Ying even described it in one of her songs. Rainforest plants grow thickly here, beasts fly, butterflies flutter, fruit gardens give education to children… If you get a chance, you should take a visit to the Evergreen Resort and enjoy a world of green.

The Guangming Farm
In 1958, the government arranged a location for overseas returnees-the Guangming Farm. People have intense memories of returning to China and arriving here. Now it's been called the "back garden of Shenzhen". Forestry, animal husbandry, farming and fishing both flourish here, and the "Guangming Milk" and "Guangming Pigeons" are both quite famous. There are many entertainment activities here now, as well: one can enjoy both grass skiing and bungee jumping.
Remains of Baguang
Baguang is renowned as a beautiful site in Shenzhen, comparable with Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan. Situated in the far east of Shenzhen, its remote nature has allowed it to remain pure, with a large number of old trees, and a rare Heritiera littoralis forest which is renowned for being the oldest in China. There are also groves of sugarcane, beaches, waves, shells, a simple quay, and an old Hakka residence. As development progresses, however, this simple countenance is slowly fading.
Haishan Park
Built next to the mountains, this is a site with a wonderful layout that combines Chinese gardening and Western architecture. It's an excellent getaway within the city centre. Amazing stone structures rise from the ground here. This is also the site of the largest chess set in China, more than 680 square metres in area, with each piece weighing more than 65 kilogrammes-playing this game is not just a test of wits, but also strength. Here mountains call, and the sea answers.

Creek Valley Park
This is a site of craggy peaks on the Mount Yuan on the eastern side of Shenzhen; the rock formations here are a sight to behold. A river flows within, and thick plant coverage is all about. Birds sing and the fragrances of flowers flow throughout the air. The water is clear and the oxygen in the air intoxicates visitors; this is a natural site better than humans could design. Taking a healthy walk through the area, appreciating flowers, picking strawberries, playing airsoft, or eating delicious country food are all activities available here. It's a great place to gather up some friends on a weekend and have a barbecue.
Rose Coast
It's a very romantic scene where rose bushes abut on the ocean, and makes for a wonderful place for couples to visit. A gallery bridge, an acacia forest, a love lock spot, "The End of the World"-this is a site that's designed for weddings, and one of the top spots for young couples to take wedding photos on the outskirts of Shenzhen, as well as one of the major sites for the wedding industry in southern China. The Rose Coast is truly a place of romance. Although one may only spend a short while here, the memories will last for a long time.
Lovers' Island
Only one mile away from Xichong Beach lies Shenzhen's most easterly point, standing alone in the sea. Sitting in the clear azure sea with beaches of fine sand, this is a place where mangroves grow and birds soar overhead. It's a popular spot for lovers, and has been called a "paradise", as well as "Shenzhen's best preserved natural site". The long beach is an excellent place for a lovers' stroll, where one can look out at the beautiful ocean. The original name "Laishizhou" is hardly ever used, with everyone now calling the place "Lovers' Island".

Plums in Maluanshan
Maluanshan, or "Mount Maluan", isn't famous for having high peaks, but rather for having beautiful waters. It has the largest spring waterfall in Shenzhen, which shines majestically with white spray. Here, one not only can view the sea, but, if luck is good, can also see a wonderful mirage. There's a wonderful forest in which plum trees grow, making for an excellent sight when they bloom. It's a wonderful place to get away and enjoy nature.

Facing the Sea
There are two places named "17 Mile" in the world: one is on the Monterey Peninsula in California, and the other is on the Dapeng Peninsula upon which Shenzhen lies. They're both mountainous, and have gentle beaches and soft waves. Vanke has the slogan "We can maintain distance with the world", which it uses to attract city dwellers. "Facing the sea, the flowers of spring bloom" is the feel that it sells, playing to the desire of people to return to nature, and have a separation from that hustle and bustle of everyday city life.

Mystic Tree
Generations come and go over the course of centuries among humans, but trees remain. The plumeria tree beside the Wu's Ancestral Hall in the Fenghuang Compound on Pinghu Sub-district is over 500 years old. It is tall, strong, and has thick foliage. In 2006 it was entered into the list of ancient trees of the Longgang District. It offsets the ancestral hall, and is a guardian of the spirits of the Wu clan. It blooms year round with great fragrance; its flowers can be sunned to make material for a tisane, which can treat headache and fever. It's known as the "Mystic Tree" by local residents.
