DO IT

Step Five is to execute those designs, pushing yourself to do what’s needed.

要想成功，你就需要一遍又一遍地重復(fù)這五步。做好這五步自然會(huì)經(jīng)歷起伏，也會(huì)取得進(jìn)步，從而令你在個(gè)人進(jìn)化上更上一層樓。對(duì)我來說，進(jìn)化過程看上去就像這樣：

A successful life consists of doing these five steps over and over again. Doing them well will naturally create the ups and downs and improvements that lead to your personal evolution to higher levels of success. To me, evolution looks like this:

這五步在任何產(chǎn)品、組織或你認(rèn)識(shí)的人身上都可以見到。

這是自然法則。

所謂進(jìn)化，就是要么適應(yīng)、要么消亡的過程。

You see this 5-Step Process everywhere: in any product, organization, or person you know.

It is just a law of nature.

Evolution is simply a process of either adapting or dying.

當(dāng)你在這個(gè)過程中不斷前進(jìn)時(shí)，你將取得更大的成功，也會(huì)迎來更嚴(yán)峻的挑戰(zhàn)。

As you push through this process, you’ll ascend to higher levels of success — which also bring greater challenges.

當(dāng)然，你爬得越高，跌得也就越重。

Of course as the heights get greater, the falls get greater, too.

我們每個(gè)人都會(huì)遭遇挫折。它們有可能毀了我們……也有可能極大程度地幫助我們進(jìn)步，這取決于我們?nèi)绾螒?yīng)對(duì)挫折。

Terrible things happen to all of us. Depending on how we handle them, they can ruin us...or they can profoundly improve us.

我們是渡過難關(guān)還是一蹶不振，這取決于我們是否愿意客觀地面對(duì)失敗，并做出正確的決定。

Whether we get through them or spiral downward depends on whether we’re willing to face the failure objectively and make the right decisions.

1982年，我經(jīng)歷了一次重大失敗。當(dāng)時(shí)，我錯(cuò)誤地預(yù)測(cè)經(jīng)濟(jì)大蕭條即將到來，并把全副身家押注于此。

當(dāng)時(shí)，市場(chǎng)極度動(dòng)蕩，我認(rèn)為美國(guó)經(jīng)濟(jì)以及與之緊密掛鉤的世界經(jīng)濟(jì)，即將陷入危機(jī)。

My big failure came in 1982 when I bet everything on a depression that never came.

The markets were very turbulent and I believed the U.S. economy (with the world economy tied to it) was headed into a crisis.

This was an extremely controversial view. I very publicly took a big risk... and was dead wrong. The U.S. economy enjoyed the greatest growth period in its history.

押錯(cuò)這一注就像當(dāng)頭一棒。我不得不向父親借了4000美元，才勉強(qiáng)維生。

Losing this bet was like a blow to my head with a baseball bat. I had to borrow $4,000 from my dad just to pay my bills...

更糟糕的是，我不得不解雇我關(guān)心、在意的人，后來我的公司就只剩下一個(gè)人——我。

...but even worse, I had to let go people I cared about so that my company was left with one employee: me.

我思考著究竟要怎么做。我應(yīng)該找份穩(wěn)定的工作，放棄創(chuàng)業(yè)的夢(mèng)想嗎？

I wondered what to do. Should I put on a tie and give up my dream of working for myself？

犯下這么大的錯(cuò)，尤其是在眾目睽睽下犯錯(cuò)，真是慘痛且令我羞愧的教訓(xùn)。

Being so wrong — and so publicly — was painfully humbling.

這一次失敗抹殺了我之前所有的成績(jī)。而且，我找不到一條合適的道路，既能給我想要的回報(bào)，又不會(huì)帶來我無法承受的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)。

I had let one bad bet erase all my good ones. And I couldn’t see a path that would give me the rewards I wanted without unacceptable risk.

你一定也會(huì)經(jīng)歷這樣的事。你會(huì)失去一些你認(rèn)為無法割舍的東西，或罹患重病、遭遇意外，又或眼睜睜地看著事業(yè)一敗涂地。

你可能認(rèn)為你的生活毀了，無法繼續(xù)了……

Something like this will happen to you. You will lose something you think you can’t live without, or suffer a terrible illness or injury, or your career will fall apart before your eyes.

You might think your life is ruined and there’s no way to go forward...

但是，一切都會(huì)過去……

一直都存在一條最好的前進(jìn)之路，你可能只是還沒有發(fā)現(xiàn)。

你只需要讓自己冷靜下來，好好反思，就能找到這條路……

然后擁抱你的現(xiàn)實(shí)，好好應(yīng)對(duì)它。

But it will pass…

There is always a best path forward though you might not see it yet.

You just have to calm yourself down and reflect in order to find it...

...and then embrace your reality and deal with it well.

我的痛苦促使我反思事物是如何運(yùn)行的，這有助于我客觀看待事物。

我看到，所有事情的發(fā)生都是有原因的，而所有已經(jīng)發(fā)生的事情都將導(dǎo)致其他事情的發(fā)生，所以現(xiàn)實(shí)就像永動(dòng)機(jī)一樣運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)，永不停歇。

My pain led me to reflect on how things work, which helped to put things into perspective.

I saw that everything that happens is a result of causes that make it happen — and that all things that happen cause other things to happen so that reality works like a perpetual motion machine that goes on into eternity.

That is literally true.

在宇宙大爆炸時(shí)，宇宙的所有法則和力量都被向前推進(jìn)，相互作用，形成類似永動(dòng)機(jī)的進(jìn)化系統(tǒng)，系統(tǒng)內(nèi)部的零件會(huì)組合成機(jī)器，運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)一段時(shí)間，然后分解，再組合成新的機(jī)器。

At the Big Bang, all the laws and forces of the universe were propelled forward, interacting with each other as a perpetual motion machine in which all the bits and pieces formed machines that worked for a while, fell apart, and then formed new machines.

所有事物都是機(jī)器，

包括星系的結(jié)構(gòu)和演化……

Everything is a machine:

the structure and evolution of galaxies...

太陽(yáng)系的形成、地球地理和生態(tài)系統(tǒng)的構(gòu)造……

...the formation of our solar system, the make-up of Earth’s geography and ecosystems...

我們的經(jīng)濟(jì)和市場(chǎng)……

...our economies and markets…

以及我們每個(gè)人。

...and each of us.

我們每個(gè)人都是一臺(tái)機(jī)器，這臺(tái)機(jī)器又由不同的機(jī)器組成，比如人體的循環(huán)系統(tǒng)、神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)，它創(chuàng)造了人的思想、夢(mèng)、情感和其他一切。

We are machines made up of machines — our circulatory system, our nervous system, etc. — that produce thoughts, dreams, emotions, and everything else.

這些機(jī)器一起進(jìn)化，創(chuàng)造了我們每天遇到的現(xiàn)實(shí)。

這些話聽起來有些抽象，但其實(shí)很務(wù)實(shí)。它讓我形成了更好的視角，幫助我更有效地應(yīng)對(duì)現(xiàn)實(shí)。

All of these machines evolve together to produce the realities we encounter every day.

That sounds philosophical, but I found it practical because it put things in perspective and helped me deal with my realities in a better way.

我觀察到，任何事情都會(huì)重復(fù)發(fā)生，只是細(xì)節(jié)上略有不同——有些事情重復(fù)發(fā)生的周期較短（比如一天有24小時(shí)），比較容易辨認(rèn)……

I observed that everything happens over and over again in slightly different ways — some in short-term cycles that are easy to recognize (like the 24-hour day)...

有些事情很少發(fā)生，我們可能一輩子都沒遇上，當(dāng)這種事情發(fā)生時(shí)，我們往往感到震驚（比如百年一遇的風(fēng)暴）。

...and some so infrequently that they haven’t occurred in our lifetimes and we’re shocked when they do (like the 100-year storm).

相對(duì)于將事物看成紛涌而至的諸多獨(dú)立個(gè)體，我將每件事物都看作“同類事物的又一例”。我可以看到它們背后的因果關(guān)系，總結(jié)出應(yīng)對(duì)的原則，并用文字和計(jì)算機(jī)代碼來表達(dá)這些原則。

Rather than seeing a whole lot of things coming at me, I could see each one as “just another one of those.” And I could see the cause-effect relationships that governed them and develop principles for dealing with them that I could express in both words and computer code.

我注意到，人們?nèi)菀资芙谑录挠绊?，而忽視很久沒發(fā)生的事，尤其是他們沒有親身經(jīng)歷過的事。

I observed that people are biased by recent history and overlook events that haven’t happened in a long time, especially if they haven’t happened to them.

但歷史會(huì)重演。

But they will happen again.

當(dāng)我思考如何平衡風(fēng)險(xiǎn)和回報(bào)的時(shí)候……我意識(shí)到風(fēng)險(xiǎn)和回報(bào)相伴相隨。

我明白，要想實(shí)現(xiàn)更大的人生價(jià)值，就得冒更大的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)……懂得如何妥善平衡風(fēng)險(xiǎn)和回報(bào)，是成就最佳人生的關(guān)鍵。

And when I thought about my challenge balancing risk and reward…I realized that risk and reward naturally go together.

I could see that to get more out of life one has to take more risk…and that knowing how to appropriately balance risk and reward is essential to having the best life possible.

假設(shè)你現(xiàn)在有兩個(gè)選擇：你可以留在原地，度過安逸但平庸的一生；你也可以冒險(xiǎn)穿越叢林，過上精彩的生活。

你會(huì)怎么選？

我無法告訴你哪條路最適合你。我們每個(gè)人都必須自己做決定。

對(duì)我來說，我想要擁有最精彩的生活，所以要弄清楚如何成功應(yīng)對(duì)高風(fēng)險(xiǎn)，以獲得豐厚回報(bào)。

Imagine you are faced with a choice. You can have a safe, ordinary life if you stay where you are or you can have a fabulous one if you can successfully cross a dangerous jungle.

How would you approach that choice？

I can’t tell you which path is best for you. We each have to decide for ourselves.

As for me, I needed to have the best life possible so I needed to figure out how to successfully deal with the big risks to get the big rewards.

要想穿過叢林，我就需要看到那些僅靠我自己無法看到的東西。而阻礙我的是人人都會(huì)遇到的兩個(gè)最大的障礙……

To cross the jungle, I needed to see more than I alone could see. But standing in my way were the two biggest barriers everyone faces...

我們的自我意識(shí)障礙和思維盲點(diǎn)障礙

OUR EGO AND BLIND SPOT BARRIERS

我們的自我意識(shí)障礙阻止我們承認(rèn)自己的弱點(diǎn)。

Our Ego Barrier prevents us from acknowledging our weaknesses.

我們把“我是對(duì)的”看得很重要，比了解真相還重要……所以我們對(duì)自己的看法深信不疑，哪怕這些看法是未經(jīng)驗(yàn)證的。

Our need to be right can come before our need to know what’s true...so we believe our opinions without testing them.

我們尤其不喜歡正視自己的錯(cuò)誤和弱點(diǎn)。當(dāng)別人指出我們的錯(cuò)誤和弱點(diǎn)時(shí)，我們本能地視之為對(duì)我們的攻擊。

We especially don’t like to look at our mistakes and weaknesses. We are instinctively prone to react to explorations of them as attacks.

這會(huì)導(dǎo)致我們做出糟糕的決定，收獲甚少，無法充分發(fā)揮自身潛能。

This leads to worse decisions, learning less, and falling short of our potentials.

思維盲點(diǎn)障礙之所以存在，是因?yàn)椴煌娜丝创挛锏姆绞讲煌?。毋庸置疑，沒有人能完全靠自己看清身邊所有的威脅和機(jī)會(huì)。

The Blind Spot Barrier exists because different people see things differently. It’s a simple fact that no one alone can see all the threats and opportunities around them.

總有別人能夠看到而你看不到的東西，如果你能獲得這些人的幫助，就能在很大程度上拓寬自己的視野。

If you can look at things with the help of others who can see what you are blind to, you’ll see much more than you can alone.

我認(rèn)識(shí)到，這樣做對(duì)我成功發(fā)現(xiàn)人生叢林中的危險(xiǎn)和機(jī)會(huì)至關(guān)重要。

I learned that doing this was essential for my successfully seeing the dangers and the opportunities in the jungle of life.

為了實(shí)現(xiàn)我的目標(biāo)，我需要不再為自己是對(duì)的而沾沾自喜，要為了解到真相而感到喜悅。

To achieve my goals, I had to replace the joy of being right with the joy of learning what’s true.

所以，我致力于尋找最有想法但與我意見不同的人。

So I looked for the most thoughtful people who disagreed with me.

我想從他們的視角去看事物，也想讓他們從我的視角去看……這樣我們就可以一起找出什么是真相，以及如何應(yīng)對(duì)真相。妥善處理深思熟慮后的分歧是一門藝術(shù)，我想掌握這門藝術(shù)。

I wanted to see through their eyes and have them see through mine... so that we could together find what’s true and how to deal with it. I wanted to learn the art of thoughtful disagreement.

從僅僅通過我的視角看待事物……到通過這些有想法的人的視角看待事物……

就像從黑白世界里跳脫出來……

Going from seeing things through just my eyes...to seeing them through the eyes of these thoughtful people…

...was like going from seeing things in black and white...

看到現(xiàn)實(shí)的五顏六色。

...to seeing them in color.

整個(gè)世界都明亮了起來。

The world lit up.

就在那個(gè)時(shí)候，我意識(shí)到，要穿過人生叢林，最好的辦法就是和有見解但與我視角不同的人結(jié)伴同行。

That’s when I realized that the best way to go through the jungle of life is with insightful people who see things differently from me.

記住五步流程。并不是每個(gè)人都能很好地完成所有這五步。

Remember the 5-Step Process. Not everyone can do all five steps well.

但總有人能看到你看不到的，能做到你做不到的，你可以尋求他們的幫助。

But you can get help from others who can see and do things you can’t.

你只需不再執(zhí)著于靠自己找到正確答案，而是對(duì)不同觀點(diǎn)持開放態(tài)度。保持頭腦極度開放的做法極大地提升了我的決策能力。

You just need to let go of your attachment to having the right answers yourself and become open-minded to these other views. This radically open-minded approach significantly improved my decision making.

我還認(rèn)識(shí)到，沒有什么比這更好的了：你與你所關(guān)心的人一起去成就共同的使命，你們彼此之間可以做到極度求真、極度透明。

I also learned that there is nothing better than to be on a shared mission with people you care about who can be radically truthful and radically transparent with each other.

我正是秉承這一理念，創(chuàng)建了一家主張創(chuàng)意擇優(yōu)的公司，并通過這樣一種運(yùn)作方式實(shí)現(xiàn)了非凡的成就。這是因?yàn)樵趧?chuàng)意擇優(yōu)的環(huán)境中，每個(gè)人都能最好地發(fā)揮其作用。

This led me to create a company with a unique idea meritocracy, operating in a way that has produced remarkable successes. That’s because in an idea meritocracy, you get the best from everybody.

我們歡迎獨(dú)立思考，也找到了處理分歧的有效途徑，以得出最好的結(jié)論。

Independent thinking is welcome, and there is an efficient process for working through our disagreements to get at what is best.

當(dāng)我遇到其他成功的人時(shí)，我發(fā)現(xiàn)他們有相似的經(jīng)歷。

When I met other successful people, I found their journeys were similar to mine.

他們都會(huì)經(jīng)歷困境，也都并非完人。為了應(yīng)對(duì)自身缺點(diǎn)，他們都會(huì)選擇與他人共事，從而發(fā)現(xiàn)自己發(fā)現(xiàn)不了的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)和機(jī)會(huì)。

They all struggle, and they all have weaknesses that they get around by working with people who see risks and opportunities that they would miss.

為遠(yuǎn)大目標(biāo)奮斗，肯定會(huì)不止一次跌倒，而且會(huì)跌得很重。這些挫折是對(duì)你的考驗(yàn)。

Striving hard for big things is bound to lead you to painful falls. These setbacks will test you.

將人與人區(qū)分開來。

They sort people.

有些人認(rèn)真思考失敗的原因，并從中吸取了寶貴的教訓(xùn)……

而另一些人則認(rèn)為這個(gè)游戲不適合自己，就此放棄。

Some think hard about what caused these setbacks and learn valuable lessons...

...while others decide that this game is not for them and get off the field.

隨著時(shí)間的推移，我有了一個(gè)更驚人的發(fā)現(xiàn)。我明白了成功并不在于實(shí)現(xiàn)目標(biāo)。

With time I made another even more amazing discovery. I learned that success is not a matter of achieving one’s goals.

我們所追求的東西只是魚餌……與我們關(guān)心的人一起為共同的目標(biāo)而奮斗，從而獲得個(gè)人進(jìn)化和有意義的關(guān)系，這才是真正的回報(bào)。

The things we strive for are just the bait...the struggle to get them with people that we care about gives us the personal evolution and the meaningful relationships that are the real rewards.

我不再想穿過叢林去獲取獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)了。相反，我想待在叢林里，和我關(guān)心的人一起奮斗，去獲得成功。

I no longer wanted to get to the other side of the jungle to reach the rewards. I instead wanted to stay in the jungle, struggling to be successful with people I cared about.

隨著時(shí)間的推移，成就使命和幫助他人獲得幸福，變得比我自己的成功更重要。

With time, the success of the mission and the well-being of other people became more important than my own success.

于是，我開始看清自己的人生弧線，超越自我。希望別人在沒有我的情況下取得成功。

Then I started to see my life arc and to see beyond myself. That led me to want others to be successful beyond me.

這就是我現(xiàn)在所處的階段，也是我把這些原則分享給你的原因。

That is where I now am and why I am passing these principles to you.

回顧我的一生，我發(fā)現(xiàn)所有人在一生中都在不同的時(shí)期為不同的事情而艱難地奮斗，直到我們成為那宏大的進(jìn)化故事中的一部分。

Looking back on my life I see that we all struggle with different things at different times in our lives until we become part of the larger evolutionary story.

所有的機(jī)器最終都會(huì)停止運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)，零部件將回歸進(jìn)化系統(tǒng)，再重新組合成新的機(jī)器。

All machines eventually break down and their parts go back into the system to become parts of new machines.

有時(shí)，這讓我們感到悲傷，因?yàn)槲覀儗?duì)自己的機(jī)器已經(jīng)有了深厚的情感。但如果你站在更高的層面來觀察整臺(tái)進(jìn)化機(jī)器是如何運(yùn)作的，就會(huì)感受到它的美。

Sometimes this makes us sad because we’ve become very attached to our machines, but if you look at it from the higher level it’s beautiful to observe how the machine of evolution works.

此時(shí)，我為你和你的人生探險(xiǎn)之旅感到最為興奮。

不用管這些原則從何而來，只要明確它們是否對(duì)你有用，然后根據(jù)自己的需要改進(jìn)。無論如何，選好你自己的原則，把它們記錄下來，讓它們和你一起進(jìn)化。

At this time, I’m most excited about you and your adventurous life journey.

Forget about where these principles came from. Just ask whether they are useful to you and evolve them to suit your own needs. And by all means, pick your own, write them down, and have them evolve with you.

我對(duì)你的唯一期望是，按照自己的好原則生活，這些原則能幫助你決定要做什么，并給你去踐行的勇氣。

My only hope for you is that you will live by your own good principles that will help you decide what to do — and give you the courage to do it.
