Lesson 8 Washington Monument
Open to the public in 1888, the Washington Monument was built as a memorial① to George Washington, the first President of the United States. At the beginning, the design of the Washington Monument was created in 1836 by an architect② named Robert Mills. It included a statue③ of Washington in a chariot④ at the top of the structure. Building began on July 4,1848, but several special things stopped the workers from building the monument. By 1858, the beginning of the Civil War⑤ made a break in further building.
After the war was over, Lieutnant Colonel Thomas L. Casey went on with the project in 1876 by designing the monument again in the shape of an obelisk⑥, or a thin, four-sided pointed structure. His plan did not contain a statue of Washington or any other building. This tall monument is a simple yet beautiful design that stands today in Washington, D.C. to remind people of the first American national leader.
