Vodafone India confirms launch of 4G service by end of year（334words）

The battle for supremacy in India's hotly contested mobile sector has intensified with Vodafone confirming it will launch its 4G mobile service before the end of the year.

 

The move comes just weeks after Indian rivals Bharti Airtel and Reliance Industries announced their own 4G rollouts.It is also another sign of Vodafone's intention to continue investing in its Indian operation as it looks at a possible initial public offering of the business.

 

The company said it had successfully started testing its 4G services and had partnered with “leading global technology infrastructure service providers” to enable the rollout.

 

The company added that “important data markets” where it had acquired spectrum in last year's auctions,“including Mumbai,Delhi,Kolkata,Bengaluru and Kochi” would be part of the first wave of the rollout which would occur before the end of 2015.

 

Earlier this month,Bharti Airtel,India's largest telecom group by sales headed by Sunil Mittal,became the first company to roll out superfast 4G mobile data packages across India,offering its service in about 300 cities and towns.

 

Vodafone's launch is set to coincide with plans by Reliance Industries,the conglomerate headed by Mukesh Ambani,to unveil Reliance Jio,its 4G service,by December on the back of a Rs1tn（$16bn）investment.

 

The heavy funding drive prompted warnings of a new round of price wars in an already fiercely competitive market. JPMorgan said in a recent note that Jio's “scheduled entry and fast maturing 4G ecosystem could adversely impact India telco landscape in more ways than one”,arguing that alongside possible price cuts Jio's entrance had forced rivals to fast-forward capex and rollout plans.

 

The launch of Jio,which will mark Reliance's re-entry into the Indian telecoms sector after about a decade,has raised some eyebrows.

 

Analysts have suggested that the venture will face an uphill battle to crack into a market which tends to consolidate around a few top players and some rivals industrialists have voiced doubts that Mr Ambani's massive outlay being recouped.
